Basic Unit Blocks (基本単位区) (Japan, 2020)
Basic Unit Blocks (基本単位区) of the Japan, 2020. The 2,139,052 basic unit blocks (基本単位区) of Japan's 2020 Population Census, the smallest units the census enumerates: roughly street blocks in towns and natural parcels elsewhere. Join on block_code, e-Stat's own link code as text (10 or 12 characters: the 5-digit municipality code, then the survey-district code); k_area is the 9-digit basic unit block number, which is not unique on its own. pref_code/pref_name and muni_code/muni_name give the parents (designated cities as their wards); area_name is the 町丁・字 the block lies in, empty for some units. Census-water units (hcode 8154) are included. Takeshima and the Northern Territories are not depicted (Japan's claims over territory another state administers are left out); the Senkaku Islands are included in Okinawa. e-Stat's prefecture lines are not edge-matched: blocks either side of a prefecture border can overlap or leave gaps, each under 1 km2. At national zooms the map tiles show only a fraction of the blocks; zoom in to a city to see them all. Official e-Stat geography, e-Stat Terms of Use (CC BY 4.0 compatible).
