Electric cars are on the rise in Europe: In 2022 battery-only electric passenger cars reached 3 million in the EU, which is 56X higher than in 2013 and an increase of 55% from 2021.

As a share of new passenger car registrations, European countries show widely different adoption rates. In Norway, electric cars made up 78% of new passenger car registrations in 2022, compared to for example 18% in Germany and 4% in Italy.

Still, the vast majority of European countries are seeing electric registration rates increasing over the past years.

As an illustration of how “slow” the electric transition is, even given high growth rates, Eurostat data shows that electric cars made up only 1.19% of the total 253 million passenger cars in the EU in 2022.
