Shutdown Impact Workers, SNAP (Maryland Food Bank)

The Maryland Food Bank's Strategy Group created this map to visualize the distribution of federal workers by zip code. We use this information to inform emergency relief planning for government shutdowns. For perspective, the map includes information about the population below the ALICE household survival budget (which is the United Way's measure to determine financial hardship). Note that the specific percentage of federal workers with incomes below ALICE is unknown. Subsequently, the ALICE data tells the story of the entire population's economic hardship in the referenced zip code. The underlying data are from the 2023 U.S. Census American Community Survey (Table B24080) and the 2025 United for ALICE study, The State of ALICE in Maryland. SNAP data is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. PLACES: Local Data for Better Health.
