Emissions and Economic Growth in EU Countries from Q3 2022 to Q3 2023

Emissions and economic data released by Eurostat on 14 February show that 23 out of 27 EU countries reduced their greenhouse gas emissions from Q3 2022 to Q3 2023. Out of those 11 countries managed to also record a growth in GDP over the same time period: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Greece, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Spain.



For the EU overall, emissions decreased by 7.1% while GDP decreased by 0.2%. The largest emissions cuts were recorded in Estonia, followed by Bulgaria and Germany. While Estonia recorded a reduction of over -30% in GHG emissions, GDP was down by -3.9% over the same period. Only Ireland recorded a lower growth (-5.8%) out of the 27 EU countries.
